Legend and some historical facts credit slaves with the production of the first face jugs in America. A slave named Dave in Edgefield, SC is credited with signing the first face jug. Folk potters in the Carolina's and Georgia continued the tradition and today their jugs are valued works of art in many collections of American folk art.
Sam's first face jugs were "Devil Jugs" and they have now evolved into other forms including political caricatures. The images below represent some of his past and present face jugs.
